Pawn Alan Summerhill
The RookPawn Alan Summerhill is a new member of the Checquy Group’s communications section whose first significant appearance places him at the point where a remote threat becomes an urgent operation. Carrying a fax addressed to Rook Thomas, he brings Myfanwy information about a danger in Reading; once she realizes the message also bears on her sister’s safety, she takes him with her and places him under strict orders.
Position in the Checquy
The Checquy Group comprises powered members and non-powered specialists drawn from the top ranks of their respective professions. Its non-powered personnel are valued contributors, but longstanding policy bars them from membership in the Court, the organization’s ruling circle. Summerhill is identified as a Pawn in the communications section, locating him within the organization’s working structure rather than its senior leadership.
His newness is explicit: when Myfanwy asks how vital he is to tracing a telephone call, he says it is only his fourth day. That detail makes his sudden involvement in a dangerous field response all the more striking. He is not presented as an established operative with a long record; he is a junior employee drawn into a crisis because he is present with information the Rook needs.
The fax and the Reading threat
Summerhill rushes into Ingrid Woodhouse’s office holding a piece of paper. A guard intercepts him at the door, flipping him around the guard’s forearm and pinning him briefly beneath a boot at his throat. Ingrid identifies him as Pawn Summerhill and tells the guard not to kill him. The physical interruption gives his arrival an abrupt, comic edge, but the paper in his hand carries a serious warning.
He reports that the call has not yet been traced and presents a fax addressed to Rook Thomas. The message, written in ornate copperplate, says that a small horror has been unleashed in Reading to demonstrate the Grafters’ capabilities, warns that John Perry’s home may soon be destroyed, and looks ahead to a meeting with Graaf Ernst von Suchtlen. Summerhill does not interpret the message for Myfanwy; his role is to deliver it, and its contents prompt her to recognize the Grafters as the threat.
Myfanwy’s orders
After realizing the danger extends beyond the immediate Reading incident, Myfanwy tells those present that they must not repeat what they have heard. She assigns the two guards as her bodyguards and turns to Summerhill to establish whether his absence would impede the call tracing. His answer—that he is only on his fourth day—helps her decide that he can be spared from that work.
Myfanwy orders him to accompany her to Reading, speak to no one about what he heard in the office, and remain within her sight unless given permission to leave. Summerhill responds with a trembling affirmation. The exchange sharply changes his immediate responsibilities: he arrives as a communications employee carrying a message, and leaves the scene assigned to a confidential journey with the Rook.
Narrative function
Summerhill’s small part in the episode makes the Checquy’s institutional hierarchy tangible through a junior member’s exposure to sudden danger. The fax moves from communications work into field action in a few minutes, while the guards’ forceful treatment of him underscores how closely security and physical coercion coexist inside the organization. His brief, nervous responses also contrast with Myfanwy’s decisive assumption of command. The evidence establishes his role in this incident, but does not describe what happens to him afterward.
